The difference between serum retinol concentrations obtained by HPLC and fluorometry (plotted on Y-axis) indicates by how much the former method is likely to differ from the latter method. The mean of these measurements (X-axis) is the best estimate of the true value, without assuming that one method is superior to the other. Assuming that the differences between results obtained with these methods are normally distributed, 95% of the differences will lie within the range that is indicated by the dotted lines.
