Inflammasomes are key signaling platforms that detect atherogenic microorganisms and sterile stressors, and that activate the highly pro-inflammatory cytokines interleukin (IL)-1β and IL-18. Inhibition of IL-1β/IL-6 signaling, which is initiated at the level of the nucleotide-binding leucine-rich repeat-containing pyrine receptor 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome, may therefore effectively reduce atherosclerotic CV outcomes.
